03 / Healing

Keep the ink you paid for.

You will leave with specific instructions for whatever was put on the tattoo that day. If those conflict with anything here, follow what you were told in the chair.

If you have Derm Shield on

  1. Leave the second-skin bandage on unless it leaks badly, lifts, or starts to burn. Typical window is 3–5 days. Do not keep it past 5.
  2. Shower is fine. Do not soak it — no baths, pools, lakes, hot tubs.
  3. Remove it in a warm shower. Peel with the skin, not up and away.
  4. Wash with clean hands and unscented antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a paper towel.
  5. Thin layer of Hustle Butter or the ointment you were given. Thin. Not glossy.

If you have a regular wrap

  1. Take the wrap off after 1–2 hours. Do not sleep in it.
  2. Wash hands first. Wash the tattoo with unscented antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. No washcloth, no loofah.
  3. Pat dry. Thin coat of Hustle Butter or approved ointment.
  4. Wash 2–3 times a day for the first week or two. Reapply a thin layer after each wash.

The next two to three weeks

  • It will itch. Slap, don’t scratch. Let flakes fall on their own.
  • No picking. Picking pulls ink.
  • No pools, ocean, baths, or saunas until it is fully closed.
  • Loose clothes over the piece. Skip long gym sessions the first few days if you can.
  • Keep it out of hard sun. After it is healed, sunscreen or cover it.
  • Skip alcohol, peroxide, and heavily fragranced lotion on the tattoo.

Products that show up in the kit

Recovery Derm Shield and Hustle Butter are what get used a lot in this chair. Fragrance-free soap (Dr. Bronner’s unscented or similar) and a light unscented lotion after the first week are fine if that is what you were told to switch to.

Questions while it heals — message Instagram or email. Do not wait on an infection. Heat, spreading red, pus, or fever means a doctor, not just more butter.
